At a recent press conference, Mayor Eric Adams revealed New York City’s plans to increase shelter capacity on Randall’s Island, with the expectation of accommodating up to 2,000 migrants. The site previously housed a similar center last year, but it had to be shut down shortly after it was established.
Fortunately, to fund this initiative, the state has pledged to reimburse the city for the camp’s operating costs. “The demand for shelter for asylum seekers is increasing day by day, pushing our infrastructure to its limits. Providing adequate shelter every night is a monumental challenge,” Adams said.
While thanking the state and Governor Kathy Hochul for their support, Adams also emphasized the need for greater cooperation from all levels of government, including the federal government, which he has repeatedly asked for additional financial assistance.
In response to the influx of asylum seekers over the past year, the city has turned to creative solutions, such as renting hotels and converting spaces like cruise terminals and former police academies into temporary shelters. Currently, more than 57,200 asylum seekers are under the city’s care.
In previous efforts, the local administration announced plans to house migrants in unusual locations, including a parking lot at a psychiatric hospital in Queens and recreational facilities in Brooklyn, such as McCarren Park and Sunset Park. The short-lived center on Randall’s Island was also mentioned, which had to be closed just weeks after opening due to changes in the number of migrants being transported from the southern border.
