According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the border between the United States and Mexico has been identified as the world’s most dangerous land migration route. In 2022, the IOM recorded 686 tragic incidents involving migrants who died or went missing along this border. This figure represents approximately 50% of the 1,457 such incidents reported across the entire Americas that year. It is worth noting that 2022 had the highest number of recorded incidents since the IOM’s Missing Migrants Project began tracking them in 2014.
Michele Klein Solomon, who leads the IOM’s work in the region covering North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, emphasized the urgent need for countries to take decisive action. She added that properly collecting and analyzing data is essential because this information can be used to establish safer migration routes.
It is important to keep in mind that the current numbers may not reflect the full reality. The actual figure is suspected to be even higher due to missing records from various official sources, including medical examiner’s offices in border regions of Texas and specialized Mexican agencies.
Although there was an 8% decrease from the previous year in the number of tragic incidents in this area, the situation may be more alarming than current records indicate.

- The leading causes of death along this border include drowning (212 cases), vehicle accidents and incidents involving dangerous transportation methods (71 cases), and adverse conditions such as extreme temperatures and a lack of basic necessities like food and water (156 cases).
- Notably, nearly half of these tragedies occurred in the desert regions of Sonora and Chihuahua, located along the border between the two countries.
